What is job shadowing?
Job shadowing is a national, state, and local educational opportunity to give students first-hand knowledge and experience in exploring the real work world. By partnering schools and employers in the community, students are better prepared for their careers.
Benefits:
· Students observe and talk to an employee in a chosen career field one-on-one.
· Students ask questions to determine the true interest in this career or job.
· Community partners look at their careers in a new light.
· Community partners meet the future employees from their area.
The Student Shadow Learns:
· The demands and the working conditions of the job
· What the job is really all aboutwhat skills, talents and qualifications are needed
· The importance of a team approach and the need of give and take in getting the job done
· The importance of communications skills, whether meeting the public, writing reports or filling out logs
· A job mean responsibility, following directions, doing some tasks over to get them exact
· The information they are learning in schools can and will be beneficial and applicable
· Setting goals in life is important
· The community shares their concerns and stands ready and willing to help students
How does Job Shadowing Work:
Coordinated through the local school Career Preparation Coordinator, each student selects occupations to explore and receives a school business absence to shadow. The typical length of a Job Shadow is from 3-5 hours to an entire workday. Students are required to do background research in their career area of interest prior to shadowing. Parent/Guardian permission is required, and the student must provide his/her own transportation.
