200 - Communication Skills 9 – 2 credits
Prerequisites: Counselor/departmental approval

This is a remedial course for those students who are archiving significantly below grade level in reading, writing and vocab skills. (two grade or below)

220 – English 9 – 2 credits
This course is for students who plan the attend collage or who desire a strong literary and writing background. The study of literature focuses on various literary genres. Writing includes an introduction to various expository forms.

221 – English 10 – 2 credits
Prerequisites: 220This is a collage prep course designed for those students who desire a strong background in English. The writing emphasis on the development of information and persuasive writing.

222 – English 11 – 2 credits
Prerequisites: 221This is a collage prep course designed for those students who desire a strong background in English. Emphasis is placed upon analytical thinking and writing skills. The literary focuses upon American experiences.

223 – English 12 – 2 credits
Prerequisites: 222
This course is designed for those who plan to attend college. Advanced expository writing is emphasized. A research paper is required. The literature focuses upon British literature, authors and movements.

232- AP English 11- 2 Credits
Prerequisites: 221 or 231
This is a course which may be substituted for English 11 upon the recommendation of the tenth grade English teacher. The course is designed for those students who expect to take the Advanced Placement English Language and Composition test.

233- AP English 12- 2 Credits
Prerequisites: 232
Students may elect to take the Advanced College Placement Test in the spring. This is a course, which m ay be selected by students who excel in English. Students who take this course should plan on taking the Advanced Placement Literature and/or Composition Test. A research paper is a requirement of this course.

240- Speech Communication- 1 Credit
This course is designed to emphasize formal speaking skills, which will enable students to transform their thoughts into an effected message. The techniques of verbal and non-verbal communication, especially organization and delivery, will be stressed. Public speaking, communication skills, listening skills, and writing speeches will be experienced. This course does not fulfill English graduation requirement.

241- Argumentation and Debate- 1 Credit
This is a fast paced course in which students will learn how to influence people and present winning points of view. A variety of class activities including short speeches, group discussions, panel discussions and debates will be employed. Does not fulfill English graduation requirement.

242- Presentational Speech- 1 Credit
This is a challenging course, which will teach students how to create diverse types of speeches at an advanced level. Skills in logical thinking, not taking, problem solving, group dynamics and leadership will be developed. Students will learn how to lead a group, how to motivate people, and how to integrate multi-media into presentations. This course does not fulfill English requirements for graduation.

243- Drama Literature-1 Credit
This course allows students to study the different types of playwrights and their plays. Students will learn this genre of literature through the study of the great classical, contemporary and musical plays of history. This does not count for an English credit.

244- Creative Theatre- 1 Credit
This course allows students to perform in plays, scenes, and inpromptu activities that relate to the theatre world. Students will learn and be exposed to all tields in the Theatre. Those fields include directing, blocking, acting, stage-managing, lights, building sets, make-up and costumes.
