What does it take to be a student athletic trainer (SAT)? It takes patients, listening and a good nose. If you can't stand the smell of stinky feet than this isn't the job for you because we get alot of that. Not only are you the trainer, you're their friend and sometimes they confide in you for things which you have to be able to keep to yourself.
As a student athletic trainer you assist the head trainer, Wendy. Your main responsibility is to make sure that the athletes are getting water. After more experience you will be able to tape and help with injuries. Since we never know when something can come up and they might need us it is important to have at least one trainer covering every sport at the high school level. Also having us there takes a load off the head trainer so they don't have to be in ten different places at once.
To be a student athletic trainer you have to attend camp on taping skills, anatomy and other useful things, so that when an emergency happens the field, you can handle it and be able to help the best that you can. This summer, the camp will be hosted by McLaren and will be held at Lapeer Regional Hospital. For more information, please contact Wendy.
